ANALYSIS by CHARACTER

Of

“Can-Can” and “The Story Of An Hour”

                   Character is a something that adhere in the soul of person. The character of someone has been there since he or she was born in the world. The character can be kind attitude and personality. Usually, the character is difficult to changed by personality, because that is something which is become with the soul. The character is also individual nature of person. Each of people has different character in themselves.

                   Now, I will explain acout analysis by character in the short story of “Can-Can” and “The Story Of An Hour”.

In the short story of “Can-Can”, there are three characters in the story. They are The wife, The husband, And Sarah. Each of them has the difference in the character.

The first is The wife. The wife has flat charater, with the evidences in the patches of the following text:

“All right, his wife said brigthly as though he were doing her favor. As a matter…..” ;

“she didn’t ask him where he was going for his drive. She wasn’t the least bit inquisitive, though jealous, she was in silent, subtle ways”. ;

“he wasn’t simply going out for a drive………, whom his wife knew but did not suspect, and with her go to a house on a lake, his wife knew nothing about…..”.

Based on the evidences above, can be concluded that the wife is faithful with The husband at the begin until ending of the story.

                   The second is The husband. The husband has a round character with the evidences in the patches of the text below:

“he wasn’t simply going out for a drive, as he had said, but going to a café to meet Sarah.” ;

It means that the husband at the begin is not loyal and also not honesty with his wife. But, a moment later the husband has been realize that his wife is loyal with him and alsobeautiful. Therefore, the husband begins to think about his wife, the evidence is:

“He suppressed laugh, as though what he was going to tell her was too absurd or silly ‘I was thinking of someone doing the Can-Can’ “.

Someone who doing the can-can is the Wife.

                   And the third is Sarah. Sarah has flat character. Because at before, Sarah has maried. But she still wants to meet and go out with The husband, until finally she knows that The husband is thinking about his wife.

The evidences are:

“He though of the difficulties………phoning Sarah at her office (she was married too).” ;

“………But he waited, and at 3:30 she arrived.”

It means that Sarah is also not loyal at the begin up to the finally of the story.

                   While, in the short story of “The Story Of An Hour” has four characters. They are Louise Mallard, Brently Mallard (husband of Louise Mallard), Josephine (sister of Louise), and Richard (friend of Brently Mallard). Each of them has different character.

The first is Louise Mallard. She has round character. Because at before she was sad when she heard the news of her husband’s death. But a momentlater, suddenly she felt that she is free after death of her husband.

The evidences are below:

“She did not hear………….., with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She swept at once, with sudden………… she would have no one follow her.” ;

“now, her bosom…………….. She said it over and over under breath: ‘free, free, free!’. “

                   The second is Brently Mallard. He has flat character, because he just be appears in the begin and ending of the story. The evidences are below:

“it was her sister Josephine…………with Brently Mallard’s name leading the list of ‘killed’.” ;

“some one was opening the front door………It was Brently Mallard……..”.

                   The third is Josephine. She has flat character. Because she always accompanies Mrs. Mallard when heard news of Brently Mallard’s death until unexpected of him in the house. The evidences are:

“It was her sister Josephine……….”;

“Josephine was kneelingbefore the closed door…………., imploring for admission.”Louise, open the door!”.

                   The last is Richard. He has flat character. Because he also accompanies Mrs. Mallard when heard news of Brently Mallard’s death until unexpected of him in the house. The evidences are:

“her husband’s riend Richard was there…….” ;

“some one was opening……………. At Richard’s quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife”.

                   So, both of shot stories between “Can-Can” and “The Story Of An Hour” have difference in the character. The character are two kinds, flat character and round character. The flat character can be changed, while the round character is same as before.
